Joe Black
stella food and great smooth extraction and glossy milk. awesome service
The lord spoke unto Sydney coffee Noah, saying: “drive down the Hume in a panel van, and bring back seven pairs of each third wave/hipster Melbourne coffee cliche for transplant into a quiet back street of north Surry Hills.” Cases in point - the small enamel crockery, reused Coopers Pale longneck water bottles, and vintage collectible tourist teaspoons - even the hipster Fitzroy moustaches printed on the takeaway cups.
Those familiar with Melbourne coffee culture may find this menagerie of borrowed ideas and influences a little schizophrenic.
This aside, an impressive coffee offering (including the first example of the ‘Magic’ double ristretto awesomeness found to date in Sydney) was let down by service that was at times sketchy, abrupt, and informal.
By necessity catering to the more traditional caffeine needs of locals, it was also odd to see a caramel latte served next to a cup of Kenyan single estate. Hopefully this exposure to great beans, single origin filter and syphon offerings will broaden the tastes of even the most die-hard Mocha lovers.
With time Joe Black will settle into its own skin, and continue to push the third wave charge in the harbour city. Definitely recommended and hopefully better with time.
