Tully’s is an out-and-out Starbucks clone, and this one is located in the large, sterile (but happily air-conditioned) foyer of an office tower, but they served me a remarkably respectable macchiato.

They make a great cappuccino here. Pretty pricey, but worth it compared to the majority of other cafés in Tokyo that serve rubbish for coffee.

Situated in the really nice part of Tokyo, The Monocle Café has some quite decent coffee. I had a macchiato (although it was more like a piccolo) and it had a nice rich flavour. The milk was a bit sweet, but you get that in Japan. Next time I’ll just tr…

Unremarkable espresso presented with the great care and kindness typical of Japanese establishments. The coffee comes with some singular quirks: shots of espresso are accompanied by a tiny jar of cream, and cappuccinos include a cinnamon stick for flavour.

This is an Italian restaurant in the Yebisu Garden Place, which we passed by on our way to the Tokyo Museum of Photography. They served us a delicious leche flan, but my espresso was a little thin and bitter (which is perhaps why an order of a macchiato…

Positively reviewed by the New York Times, (http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/12/16/ristretto-tokyo-coffee/) Chatei Hatou isn’t an espresso shop - it’s more of a traditional Japanese Kissaten, and the coffee is prepared in a drip-style, but with i…
