Paperplate
Paperplate normally does slightly better flat whites than its upstairs cousin Bookplate, depending who’s on the machine, and has a range of cheaper food options. They only have paper takeaway cups so the coffee drinking ritual is less pleasant, but there are weird funky chairs and free wifi.
Hidden away underground, this unassuming café is less-visible and lower-end than Bookplate upstairs. Like its upstairs cousin it is totally incapable of dealing with a rush of eager coffee drinkers: however, it’s also less likely to *have* a big line, so this is the smart choice when things get busy. My double espresso was reasonably good, although I burnt my tongue as the biodegradeable paper cup didn’t clue me in on its temperature. A range of less-glamorous lunchtime snacks and sandwiches are also available.
